Complete Walk Through Organic Chemistry

This is the most important and also the most scoring topic of chemistry provided you understand the concepts well and develop your basics right . About 40% of the JEE paper is usually from Organic Chemistry .The most important chapter of Organic is Aldehydes and Ketones and must be studied rigorously .Seeing the latest trend ,JEE has been asking questions directly from foreign Author Books like "Morrison Boyd","Peter Sykes" etc .One must follow only Foreign author books for organic chemistry .Indian author books mostly are not much relevant and might contain lots of error .

"General Organic Chemistry and Isomerism"-One of the most important topic and how much of organic chemistry you will understand will entirely depend on your understanding of this chapter .Study concepts like 'Inductive effect','Hyperconjugation','Resonance effect','Aromaticity' ,because these will help all throughout .Questions of Acidic/Basic comparison,Aromatic Nature,Nomenclature are quite important .Practise a lot of questions on Sterioisomerism and Tautomerism .

Give special emphasis to Name Reactions and Reducing Agents specially , understanding there mechanism and also there special cases ,which are mostly present in books .JEE has asked quite a lot of special cases in recent years . You might never see an organic paper without a question of 'Aldol' and 'Cannizaro'.Read about name reactions and prepare for them specially from more then one book .
For reducing agents refer to charts given in books and also remember the conditions for temprature etc, for various reagents like DIBAL-H ,BH3 and so on .

Your approach while studying Organic should not be to memorize but understand the mechanism for the reaction and the conditions used for the reaction .While studying ask yourself questions like why was this reagent used and why was this reactant taken for synthesis ?What would happen if other reactant was used instead of this? This approach would help you a lot for better understanding of the topic .

You should not neglect topics like Carbohyrates, Amino acids and Polymers.Use NCERT and Morrison Boyd for these topics .These have become highly relevant in recent times .

The books for Organic can be divided into theory books and the books for practise .There are many books for Theory .

THEORY BOOKS
  •  One of the best books for Organic chemistry is Morison Boyd .This books is best for studying reactions and for Biomolecules .(Highly Recommended )

(Indian Version)        (International Version/Original Book)
  • Solomons and Fryle ,One of the most used book by students due to the simplicity and clarity of the concepts explained in the book .There are many versions of the book but any of the above can be used to study .The Stereochemistry part of the book is very well explained and written well.(Highly recommended)

(Indian Version       (International           (Indian version )
       Edited )                   version  )

You can use the Indian version for JEE ,but if you are also preparing for olympiads refer to the International version .
  • LG wade , It is a good book and really helpful for mechanism .It contains special keys for mechanism .They are generalised very well . Aldehydes and Ketones can be best studied from LG wade ,including the condensation reactions that are covered elaborately .(Recommeded)

It is highly recommended that you should have at least 1 book from the above 3 .
  • Peter Sykes,Also known as the 'Bible of Organic Chemistry' .One of the most concise and accurate books ever written, basically sums up Organic Chemistry in a very small volume with all the important details making it ideal for revision purposes and for students who don't have much time left for preparation.JEE has asked so many direct questions from the book ,including a a passage .The book is very well written and follows the mechanist approach .The coupling reactions and the various types of rearrangement are a must read . (Highly Recommended)

This book is highly recommended and is very important for olympiads as well .

PROBLEM BOOKS

For problems you can use either of these books .They are typicaly of the same level with slight variation in difficulty .I have arranged the books in increasing difficulty . One must practice sufficient problems specially of Stereoisomerism. Practising problems is a very essential part of becoming good inn Organic Chemistry since there are a lot of reactions and practising problems ensures that we know all the reactions.
  • Himanshu Pandey (Highly Recommended for Beginners)

  • Akshay Chaudhary .It contains lots of question of each topic with integer type and multi-correct .as well .Practise Goc and acid/base from this book .Contains all the exceptions and questions of ortho effects well. (Recommended)

  • M S Chauhan ,Definitely the best book and should be done completely if you are aiming top ranks .Quality of questions is very high and various concepts and topics are mixed .It is quite good for revision as well . Contains a complete map of organic reactions on the last page that is quite helpful for quick revision .The solutions for the book are also available free with the book itself.(Highly Recommended)

Apart from these books one must follow NCERT as well .NCERT is quite suited for Biomoloecules specially . NCERT is Highly Recommended

  1. When should we do MS Chauhan? When we are studying the topic or when we are revising them i.e. in the final months before JEE?

    1. Well it all depends upon your level of prep.If you are currently in 11 solve only GOC and Isomerism chapters ,dont yet try chapters of hydrocarbons .Once your whole syllabus of organic is complete and you are done with easy questions and would like to master your skill, then solve the whole book .If you arent much confident try and solve Himanshu Pandey first then

    1. I have mentioned the appropriate books under each section of the blog .The indian version of the foreign books dont have that many errors .There might be some errors in practice books but so are there in JEE aswell .

  9. First of all you should solve its previous papers since you might get intimidated when you see these type of questions for the first time. Physical and inorganic asked in the exam are easily tackled by jee preparation. But for organic you need special preparation off the track from JEE.

  17. I am a dropper and my basics in organic chem arent clear. After clearing the basics, since time isnt on my side, should i directly solve past years questions BEFORE attempting problem books like MS Chauhan/ Himanshu pandey or VICE VERSA?
